“Founded in 1960” might sound like yesterday for some cities. However, here at Comunidad Cristiana San Martín, it marks the beginning of a vibrant spiritual journey in Buenos Aires. This Comunidad Cristiana San Martín started in the residential neighborhood of Olivos. It was not far from the presidential residence and the Río de la Plata.
Initially, Comunidad Cristiana San Martín’s home was just a block from its current location. The church you see now was built with bricks. These bricks were made from the very soil of Buenos Aires. This soil comes from the swamps of the Río de la Plata coastline.
European immigrants founded Comunidad Cristiana San Martín. It began alongside a similar community in Sao Paulo. Today, it is mainly “porteña” meaning from Buenos Aires. However, it has branches seeking independence within Argentina.
Buenos Aires is South America’s second-largest city. Its port and airport welcome people from all over the world. This includes migrants from the Americas, Europe, and Asia. Here, various religions and cultures meet. Besides Catholicism, Judaism, Lutherans, Islam, and American evangelical groups have taken root.
Argentina values creativity and has a large middle class. Its hard-won freedom is palpable. Civil society has grown because of the economic crisis and the military dictatorship. The Comunidad Cristiana San Martín contributes to this society. It offers a space to explore life’s big questions. Worship is central here. It provides an existential core to community life. Many initiatives have sprung from Comunidad Cristiana San Martín. “La Choza” is a 130-hectare farm 60 km away. It practices biodynamic agriculture aiming to heal the earth. It also provides healthy food. Young people from around the world come here as interns. Other initiatives share cultural wealth in marginalized areas. Youth programs include camps, religious classes and confirmation preparation.
The Comunidad Cristiana San Martín has a professional puppet theater. Young people and adults create the plays. There is also a table theater for younger children. These performances are eagerly anticipated. The constant study of the Gospels is typical here. Currently, six groups study them regularly. They meet weekly or monthly.
A key feature is the blending of worship, art, and study. Artists offer their talents in music and painting. They also study and experience the altar’s colors. The art of words and theater are also present. All relates to what comes from the altar. This is a constant collaboration with the priests.
Currently, Comunidad Cristiana San Martín has four active priests. There are two men and two women. Additionally, there are two retired priests. They serve about 170 members. They also serve many friends and interested people. A branch in Neuquén Province is now independent. It has its own priest and permanent altar. They are building their church. From there, they visit Mendoza in the west and Lago Puelo in southern Argentina.
Córdoba Province has another branch. A priest from Buenos Aires visits regularly. “La Choza” also has an altar. It is a place for community gatherings and camps. It is also the site of a future village for seniors. Another group is forming 40 km away in Ingeniero Maschwitz. A priest visits regularly. Since 2012, they have been regularly holding Sunday services for children.
Comunidad Cristiana San Martín is still relatively young. The pioneers who brought it accompany us from the spiritual world. Many baptisms and confirmations are celebrated. These are living signs of this community’s quest.
The Comunidad San Martín directly depends on the Holy See. It is an association of deacons and priests serving dioceses. The community trains priests in a simple model. This includes intense community life, love for the Church and liturgy, demanding studies, mobility, and good humor. Sent on missions in groups of at least three, priests and deacons pray. They live and work together in spiritual and pastoral brotherhood.
