Ever wondered where the heart of Heathrow Airport beats? The Compass Centre stands before us. This office building is more than just a workplace. It’s a central hub in the airport’s daily operations.
The Compass Centre serves as the head office for Heathrow Airport Holdings. It once served as a British Airways flight crew center. Imagine pilots and flight attendants bustling through these halls preparing for their next journey.
Let’s step back in time. The Compass Centre wasn’t always intended for British Airways alone. Lynton plc, Heathrow Airport’s property development division, initially planned it as speculative office space. However British Airways decided to consolidate its operations here. Construction began in August 1992. Just 15 months later, the building was complete.
In 2008, Terminal 5 opened. British Airways staff relocated there, including crew check-in. The Compass Centre underwent refurbishment in 2009. Heathrow Airport Limited, then known as BAA, moved in.
Notice the building’s design. Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners designed the Compass Centre. It sits slightly askew from Heathrow’s northern runway. The Northern Perimeter Road separates them. Penny McGuire described it as a shining glass and bright blue clad exterior. She noted it stood out among Heathrow’s grim buildings. It was designed to accommodate 800 British Airways employees. The Compass Centre offered a large on-airport facility close to operations.
The Compass Centre features three connected blocks. These are East, Meridian, and West. Meridian is slightly larger. Each block has three floors split into North and South sides. Meridian boasts a glass atrium. This arrangement provides 200000 square feet of office space.
The design allows easy division between tenants. The building can accommodate subletting and flexibility. Reinforced concrete forms the structural frame. Glass was chosen as the primary material. This is because glass minimizes radar interference. It is also acoustically efficient. The design limits heat gain and solar glare. The building is also sound-proofed.
The British Council for Offices recognized the building. It awarded the Compass Centre the Best Delivered Workplace award. Ownership shifted from BAA to Arora Group in 2008. Prologis acquired it in 2021.
Inside, you would find a restaurant in the West Block. A Caffe Nero sits on the Meridian ground floor under the glass atrium. The Meridian ground floor also houses a visitor suite. The West block often serves as a training center. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the West Block was reconfigured as a vaccination center. It handled over 100000 people in less than two years.
The Compass Centre also hosts Heathrow Airport’s Operation Centre. It is located on the second floor of the East Block. Opened in 2014 it unites key airport functions. These include Security Engineering Police and IT. A video wall with 60 flatscreen panels displays crucial information.
The Compass Centre exemplifies modern airport infrastructure. It combines functionality with striking design. It has adapted to changing needs. From flight crew hub to vaccination center it stands as a testament to Heathrow’s operational core.
