Step into the heart of Como Park Zoo and Conservatory, a sprawling oasis in the city. It’s not just a place for animals and plants, but a living history lesson. This park, over 750 acres, boasts more than just the zoo and conservatory. Amusements, trails, and even a golf course are nestled within. It started in 1873 when the city of Saint Paul, hungry for green spaces, acquired 300 acres around Como Lake. The park grew, and so did the zoo, initially with three donated deer. The first zoological building, inspired by the Art Deco style, arrived in 1936. Through donations, the collection expanded, and the zoo welcomed exotic animals. The conservatory, however, predates the main zoo building by a year. Built in 1913, it’s a marvel of greenhouse architecture. Stepping inside is like walking into a world of waterfalls, vibrant displays of flowers, and lush flora. The conservatory even hosts the Japanese Garden, a gift that represents the friendship between Saint Paul and Nagasaki, Japan.
