How did a gang member end up at the bottom of Como Lake? That’s a story for another day. Today we’re exploring Como Lake itself. This isn’t just any lake. Como Lake in St Paul Minnesota is part of a larger recreational area Como Park. It’s been a beloved spot for over a century. Originally more wetland than lake Como was expanded and deepened during Como Park’s development. It’s fed by storm runoff. Algae blooms used to be a big problem. The lake smelled bad. But thanks to efforts like replacing invasive plants and using alum treatments the water quality has improved significantly. Think about that the next time you take a stroll along its shores. Como Lake wasn’t always pristine. After the infamous James-Younger Gang raid in Northfield in 1876 the body of gang member Charlie Pitts was temporarily submerged here. A local physician Dr Henry Hoyt wanted the bleached skeleton for his office. It later ended up at a museum then eventually at a university lab. Now that’s a story with a twist. But Como Lake’s story is more than just skeletons. The lake is home to a variety of fish including black bullhead bluegill northern pike and walleye. However some fish have consumption restrictions due to mercury and PFOS contamination. So remember to check the latest guidelines before enjoying your catch. The lake itself is 70.5 acres and up to 15.5 feet deep. It’s a peaceful place for relaxation or recreation. It has a pavilion that hosts concerts and plays during warmer months. Como Park also has a zoo and conservatory making Como Lake more than just a body of water. It’s the heart of a vibrant community. It’s a place where history nature and recreation intertwine. So next time you visit Como Lake remember the stories whispered by its waters the fish swimming beneath its surface and the ghosts of the past that linger nearby. It’s a place of beauty resilience and unexpected secrets.
