Stepping inside the modest walls of the Community of Christ Church in Austin, you might initially wonder what stories these walls hold. The unassuming exterior belies a rich history, intertwining with the growth of Austin’s vibrant north side. The Community of Christ Church, located at 2132 Bluebonnet Lane, wasn’t always here. Its roots trace back to a bustling 1926 Austin, when the city needed another Church of Christ. A small group, just 21 souls, planted the seed for a new congregation on the north side, a location deemed promising with its convenient trolley car access. Their first meeting? An outdoor gospel meeting, a testament to their simple beginnings. Initially, they gathered at a former Methodist building at the corner of 43rd and Avenue B. This fledgling group, the future Community of Christ Church, grew rapidly. In just one year, they numbered 79 members. Within three years, they had more than tripled that number. This growth fueled the purchase and expansion of their building, adding new pews and even constructing a classroom building. Their first elders, Dr. Albert Deveny, Oscar Eschberger, Luther Norman, Tom King, and Russell L. Lewis, guided the church in these formative years. The Community of Christ Church continued to flourish. Sunday mornings at the Community of Christ Church start with Food for Friendship at 9:00 am. This sets the tone for their communal worship, with Good News, prayer requests, and announcements at 10:45 am, followed by the worship service at 11:00 am. The first Sunday of each month holds special significance, marked by the sharing of communion. The church extends an open invitation to all who believe in Jesus Christ to join them at the communion table, regardless of their membership. From its humble origins, the Community of Christ Church stands as a beacon of faith and community, welcoming all who seek a spiritual home in Austin.
