“A church built on faith,” the old woman whispered, her eyes twinkling as she motioned towards Community Baptist Church. “That’s what they call it, and for good reason.” The Community Baptist Church, a beacon of hope on Toronto Street, has seen a lot in its time. Established in 1947, its roots run deep, nurtured by the unwavering faith of its founders. Initially, it was just a small group of believers who had left the Southlawn United Methodist Church. They yearned for a space where they could come together, united by their shared love for Jesus Christ. On July 25th, a momentous gathering took place. Twenty-five souls, hearts filled with a shared vision, met to lay the groundwork for what would become the Community Baptist Church.

This small group, guided by the Reverend K.F. Dodson and Mr. R.W. Coles, meticulously navigated their differences. They crafted a constitution, debated over a name, and ultimately settled on a location, their hearts set on building a sanctuary for their faith. By September 7th, the Community Baptist Church opened its doors, welcoming 55 eager attendees for Sunday school. A mere 46 souls attended the church service later that day, marking the beginning of their spiritual journey. In October, the church, now with a dedicated congregation of 39 charter members, formally welcomed Mr. M. L. Allman, a student at Goshen College, as their part-time pastor. This act solidified their commitment to God’s teachings and laid the groundwork for the church’s enduring legacy.

Over the years, the Community Baptist Church has been a steadfast presence, even relocating to Kern Road in 1951 and later to Miami Road in 1968 to accommodate its growing community. In 1976, their commitment to education led them to establish the Community Baptist Christian School, further extending their mission of service and knowledge. The Community Baptist Church stands as a testament to the power of faith and community. It’s a place where countless souls have found solace, guidance, and above all, an unshakeable sense of belonging. Their story, much like their faith, is still being written.
