The Commercial Club of Chicago. It was a prominent organization. It sought to improve and beautify the city. In 1903, the club recognized a need. Congested neighborhoods lacked playgrounds. So, they stepped in. They created a small park in West Town.
Imagine this: It was 1903. The Commercial Club members donated $10,000. At that time, it was the largest gift for such a project. Initially, the park was named Lincoln Playground. This was after Wolcott Avenue. Wolcott Avenue was previously known as Lincoln Street.
Fast forward to 1906. The Commercial Club donated the park to Chicago. But there was a condition. The park had to be named in honor of the Commercial Club. The name could never be changed. This ensured their legacy would endure.
The Commercial Club remained actively involved. They supported this park and others. In 1908, they donated $1,000. This was for an ornamental fence around Commercial Club Park. They also gave annual gifts of $200. These provided prizes. They were for athletic contests in various parks.
What did Commercial Club Park offer when it first opened? It included playground equipment. There were sand courts and a shelter house. The park also featured a playfield. In winter, it was flooded for ice skating.
Time marched on. In 1938, the city constructed a fieldhouse. It provided a gymnasium and playroom. Then, in 1959, a significant change occurred. The city transferred the park to the Chicago Park District. This included over 250 other properties.
The story doesn’t end there. In 1980, the park district took action. They rehabilitated the fieldhouse. Commercial Club Park grew in size. An adjacent electric sub-station was acquired and demolished.
Today, Commercial Club Park continues to serve. It offers programs for all ages. There is “Kids – Winter at Commercial Club.” “Bitty Basketball” introduces the sport to young children. “Dodgeball” provides fun for older kids. There are even programs for the little ones. “Moms, Pops & Tots Interaction” fosters early development.
