Picture this a sprawling 135-acre expanse of green. This is Columbus Park Chicago’s hidden gem.

Columbus Park isn’t just a park. It’s a living testament to the Prairie School of landscape architecture. Its design is the brainchild of Jens Jensen a Danish immigrant who rose through the ranks to become the West Park Commission’s chief landscape artist. Jensen’s vision for Columbus Park transformed a former seminary site into a masterpiece. This was Jensen’s first large park project. He started designing it in 1915.

Imagine the bustling West Side of Chicago in 1912. Nearly 900000 people crammed into neighborhoods with only two tiny playgrounds. The West Park Commission saw a dire need for recreation. They purchased the land from the Catholic Church for $560000. The church had abandoned plans to build a seminary there. This acquisition marked the beginning of a grand vision. Columbus Park was the first large park conceived by the commission since 1869.

Jensen’s design reflected the natural beauty of the area. He used native plants a technique rare at the time. His stonework including waterfalls a council ring and paths showcased the Midwest’s natural rock outcroppings. The buildings reflect his Prairie approach. Schmidt Garden & Martin created stunning entry lanterns. John S Van Bergen may have designed a small playground shelter.

The park’s completion wasn’t without its challenges. Jensen’s removal in 1920 left the refectory and boathouse unfinished. Chatten & Hammond completed these structures in 1923. While a stylistic departure the refectory was well-received. The Works Progress Administration later helped restore the landscape and convert a stable into a gymnasium.

Sadly nine acres were lost to the Eisenhower Expressway in 1953. Despite this Columbus Park retains its charm. Its waterfalls and landscape were restored in 1991. The refectory followed a few years later. Columbus Park received National Register of Historic Places status in 1991. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2003.

Today Columbus Park continues to thrive. It remains a beloved community space. Its refectory hosts weddings. Its meadows serve as ball fields and a golf course. This park is a testament to Jensen’s genius and a must-see for anyone visiting Chicago. The park embodies Jensen’s ideals. It’s a place where nature and community meet.
