“A vibrant and quirky setting for your next creative event.” That’s how Color Club describes itself. And I think it hits the nail on the head. Let’s step inside.

Color Club began its new life in 2020. Abby Monroe and Josh Dihle bought the building at 4146 N. Elston Ave. They transformed it into an artist studio and cultural center. The pandemic delayed their plans, but they opened in 2021. Initially, Color Club hosted private events. They also provided gallery space and studios for local artists.

But this building has a long history. Built in 1922, it first served as the meeting place for Chicago’s International Order of Vikings. Later, in 1958, the Latvian Community Center and Folk Art Museum took ownership. For 62 years, they celebrated many occasions here. They used the building’s two ballrooms, tavern, and museum.

Abby and Josh fell in love with the building’s character. They worked hard to preserve as much of it as possible during renovations. They repurposed rooms into artist studios and shared tool shops. Also they created a library and multi-purpose rooms. The second-floor ballroom and tavern remain as performance and community gathering spaces.

Color Club received city approval to sell tickets for plays and arts-focused performances. To celebrate, they hosted a reading from spoken word poet Rudy Francisco. More events followed. Color Club hosted Barely Fair. It is an international art fair featuring miniature works from 30 art galleries.

Josh is an artist. He paints, carves, and teaches at the School of the Art Institute. Abby has worked in community engagement for over 15 years. Together, they run Color Club. They hope to provide a home for creative expression and meaningful gathering.

Color Club has 16 artists working in its studios. They represent a wide range of mediums. Some are recent graduates. They create experimental art. Others are established artists creating museum-level gallery art.

The owners are open to sharing Color Club with the community. They are willing to give tours to those who are curious. Color Club holds events like woodworking and ceramics classes. It truly is a space for everyone.

Color Club has a capacity of 200 people. It is available for various events. These include weddings, meetings and parties. It stands as a testament to community. It is a place where art and history intertwine. It is a place where creativity thrives.
