Standing tall in the heart of Place Vendôme, the Colonne Vendôme is more than just a monument; it’s a dramatic tale chiseled in bronze. Imagine this, a golden Parisian sunset drapes the square in warm hues. The air hums with the gentle murmur of tourists and Parisians alike. Let’s step back in time and unravel its story, one that is as captivating as the intricate bas-reliefs that adorn its shaft.

The Colonne Vendôme stands as a stark reminder of the ambition and the enduring legacy of Napoleon Bonaparte. It was his vision that brought this mighty column to life back in 1810, a replica of the ancient Column of Trajan in Rome. The bronze used for the sculptures and bas-reliefs that spiral up the shaft came from the melted down cannons captured from the Russians and Austrians after the Battle of Austerlitz – a victory that propelled Napoleon’s star to new heights. The 1200 cannons, though a number exaggerated for propaganda purposes, were actually around 400.

The column witnessed Napoleon’s rise and fall. In 1814, after the Empire crumbled, the statue of Napoleon at the summit was removed and replaced with a fleur-de-lis adorned white flag, a symbol of the Restoration. The original statue was melted down, destined for the statue of Henri IV on the Pont Neuf. The statue then went up on the column in 1833, only to be brought down again in 1871.

A defiant act of the Paris Commune saw the Colonne Vendôme toppled in 1871. It was a symbolic act of defiance against the legacy of Napoleon, deemed a symbol of oppression and militarism. The fallen column was a dramatic sight. Just a few years later the column was reconstructed with a new statue of Napoleon, at the behest of the newly formed Third Republic. It stands today as a potent reminder of the tumultuous history of France, a monument that tells a story of ambition, defeat, and enduring spirit. The column, once a symbol of power and ambition, is now a silent witness to the resilience of the Parisian spirit and the enduring power of history.
