Colonne Puget Bust

Amidst the vibrant energy of Marseille, a silent sentinel stands watch. The Colonne Puget Bust, perched atop its ancient column, holds a story waiting to be unveiled. This monument isn’t just a statue. It’s a time capsule, echoing with the whispers of empires and revolutions. The Colonne Puget Bust, as it stands today, is a tribute to Pierre Puget, a renowned sculptor and architect from Marseille. His bust, crafted by Jean-Joseph Foucou in 1816, crowns a granite column gifted by the city of Aix-en-Provence. But the column’s journey began long before Puget’s likeness graced its summit. Originally part of a commemorative fountain commissioned by Prefect Charles Delacroix, it once stood proudly on Cours Bonaparte, now known as Cours Pierre Puget. This fountain, envisioned as a grand addition to the newly extended promenade, faced numerous political and financial setbacks, causing the project to span over fifty years. The column itself has seen a fascinating evolution. It first bore a bust of Napoleon Bonaparte. With the restoration of the monarchy, the bust was replaced by a gilded fleur-de-lis. Later, another bust of Napoleon briefly returned before finally being replaced by Puget’s in 1873. This act solidified the garden’s name as Jardin de la Colline Puget. The Colonne Puget Bust thus stands as a testament to the changing tides of power and the enduring legacy of art.
