A forgotten battle echoes in this very spot. Welcome to Colonia Churubusco a neighborhood steeped in history. Before the Spanish conquest this area thrived as Huitzilopochco a significant Aztec settlement. It lay on a strategic causeway linking Tenochtitlan to other villages. A temple dedicated to the powerful god Huitzilopochtli stood proudly here. The Spanish conquest saw the temple destroyed. Franciscan friars built a convent and church on the site Our Lady of the Angels. The name Churubusco a Spanish adaptation of Huitzilopochco replaced the original name. Centuries later Colonia Churubusco witnessed another pivotal moment. The Battle of Churubusco a key engagement of the Mexican-American War. On August 20 1847 Mexican forces fiercely defended the convent against the US army. The battle was brutal. Mexican troops eventually surrendered. The convent later served as a military hospital. Today the former convent houses the Museum of the Interventions. It stands as a powerful reminder of Mexico’s history. The streets around the museum still bear witness to this battle. You can find Calle Heroes del 47 and Calle Martires Irlandeses. They honor the Mexican heroes and the Irish soldiers of Saint Patrick’s Battalion who fought bravely. Many of the Irish soldiers defected from the US army. They believed the war was unjust. They fought alongside the Mexicans. Some were executed as traitors.
