Look at this magnificent structure. This is the Colne Valley Viaduct. It is one of the largest single civil engineering works of the High Speed 2 Phase 1. Stretching over 2.1 miles and weighing 116,000 tonnes, the Colne Valley Viaduct is the largest railway bridge in the UK. It is one of the most prominent features of the High Speed 2 line. Construction started in 2017, with the first of 56 concrete piers being cast in late 2021. A dedicated team of highly skilled engineers used a massive bridge-building machine to lower 1,000 uniquely shaped deck segments into place. These segments were made on-site at a purpose-built factory. The main deck was completed in September 2024. The final concrete segment was lowered into place and the structural work is now finished. Once the viaduct is fully operational, it will carry HS2 trains travelling at up to 200 mph. The viaduct was designed to minimize its footprint on the surrounding landscape. The design was inspired by the flight of a stone skipping across the water, with a series of elegant spans up to 80 m long. Each segment is uniquely shaped to allow the structure to curve. Passengers will have a great view of the lakes below, especially from the translucent acoustic barriers which reduce noise. They are installed along the entire length of the viaduct. The Colne Valley Viaduct is a truly impressive piece of engineering.
