How much gratitude can a city hold? We are standing before the Collingwood Sailors and Soldiers Memorial Hall, a testament to the sacrifices made during World War I. This grand structure, built in the classical revival style, was a gift from the citizens of Collingwood to honor the brave souls who served their country. The Collingwood Sailors and Soldiers Memorial Hall’s foundation stone was laid in December 1923. The ceremony was particularly poignant, with two stones laid by men who represented different facets of wartime experience. Brigadier-General R. Smith, a decorated officer, laid one stone, while William Ruthven, a local Victoria Cross recipient, laid the other. Just a few months later, in June 1924, the hall was officially opened. Captain Albert Jacka, another Victoria Cross recipient, did the honors. During his speech, Captain Jacka reflected on the Gallipoli campaign, dispelling the myth that Australian soldiers were opposed to the evacuation. He emphasized that everyone understood the futility of sacrificing more lives in a lost cause. The Collingwood Sailors and Soldiers Memorial Hall served as more than just a tribute. It was a vibrant community hub, a place for gatherings, and a symbol of unity and resilience in the face of adversity. This hall stands as a reminder of the profound impact of war on this community and the enduring legacy of those who served.
