Gazing up at the Collegium Albertinum, have you ever wondered about the lives it once held? This striking neo-Gothic structure, completed in 1892, stands on the grounds of a former Roman settlement. Remnants of Roman baths still lie beneath it. The Collegium Albertinum served as the theological seminary for the Archdiocese of Cologne. It housed students studying Roman Catholic theology at the University of Bonn. These aspiring priests were not called candidates, but diocesan theologians. This emphasized their ongoing studies. The Albertinum also housed other Catholic institutions. These included the Görres Society, the Institute for State Church Law, and the Albertus Magnus Institute. The building, designed by Johannes Richter, stands proudly on Adenauerallee. It’s a protected landmark. In the 1980s, the Collegium Albertinum underwent renovations. During these renovations, well-preserved sections of Roman baths were unearthed. In 2018, the Collegium Albertinum housed 21 aspiring priests. They undertook rigorous academic and spiritual training. This training included vocal coaching and counseling practice. They also completed a six-week internship in a social institution. The third year of study was a “free semester”. Students studied at a different university and lived independently. This encouraged self-reliance and a simple lifestyle. They also did a parish internship. They got their first introduction to pastoral care for the sick. Students returned to the Collegium Albertinum for their fourth and fifth years. They continued their studies at the University of Bonn, attending daily mass and receiving the sacrament of penance regularly. Upon completing their studies, they moved to the archiepiscopal seminary in Cologne. There, they received their ordination as deacons and priests. The Collegium Albertinum held a library of around 20,000 books on theology and philosophy. It was open to the public, although borrowing books wasn’t allowed. Notably, the future Pope Benedict XVI, Joseph Ratzinger, resided here during his time as a professor of fundamental theology in Bonn. He lived at the Collegium Albertinum from 1959 to 1963. This period fostered a close relationship with Cardinal Josef Frings of Cologne, who later took Ratzinger to Rome as an advisor for the Second Vatican Council. In 2024, the Collegium Albertinum’s role as a seminary ended. The remaining students moved to shared accommodations in Bonn or the seminary in Cologne. Today, the archdiocese plans to lease this historic building, marking a new chapter in its story.
