Established in 1843 by Bishop George Augustus Selwyn, the College of Saint John the Evangelist stands as a testament to faith and education. The College of Saint John the Evangelist began its journey at the Te Waimate mission. It eventually found its home here in Auckland. The College of Saint John the Evangelist serves as the residential theological college for the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand, and Polynesia. It’s a hub for ministry formation and theological education. The College of Saint John the Evangelist caters to the three Tikanga of the province. It offers on-site ministry formation and diploma-level teaching throughout New Zealand and Polynesia. The college collaborates with other institutions to provide theology degrees. Aspiring ordinands pursue a New Zealand Diploma in Christian Studies at the College of Saint John the Evangelist. They then complete their theological degrees at partner institutions such as Laidlaw College, Carey Baptist College, or the University of Otago. Lay individuals and ordained members also have the opportunity to study for the New Zealand Diploma in Christian Studies through regional weekend intensives or FlexiLearn, a distance learning program. The College of Saint John the Evangelist also houses the John Kinder Theological Library. This library and archive serves the college as well as the wider Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand, and Polynesia. It’s named after a former principal, John Kinder. The college boasts a rich history and has played a significant role in shaping religious education in the region.
