A century of smiles. That’s what the College of Dentistry in Manila represents. Picture this grand institution standing proudly on Taft Avenue. Its history whispers tales of innovation and dedication.
Established in 1915 as a department within the UP College of Medicine and Surgery the College of Dentistry quickly grew. It wasn’t always easy. The Second World War caused significant damage forcing closure. Yet resilient as ever the college reopened in 1945.
The early days were fascinating. Barbers surprisingly acted as dentists. Their methods though crude marked the beginning of dental practice in the Philippines. Capitan Chengcheng a skilled carver and prosthetist became a pivotal figure. He partnered with a French dentist Monsieur M Fertri creating a unique collaboration. This marked the start of true dental practice in the country.
The arrival of American influence brought significant changes. Filipino dentists educated in American dental schools returned. They established the Sociedad Dental de Filipinas a society which played a crucial role. It paved the way for the establishment of the first dental school in Manila. This led to the creation of other dental schools across the Philippines including the University of the Philippines National University Centro Escolar University and finally the Manila College of Dentistry.
The College of Dentistry wasn’t just about education. It was about progress. The legislature passed Act No. 3538 extending the dental course to four years. This emphasized the importance of comprehensive dental training. A further achievement was Republic Act No. 417. This law implemented practical tests for dental board examinations.
The College of Dentistry played a crucial role in shaping the dental profession in the Philippines. From humble beginnings to a respected institution the college continues its legacy. It trains knowledgeable technically capable and socially sensitive dentists. The College of Dentistry in Manila is not just a building. It is a testament to a century of dedication to oral health. It’s a place where the pursuit of a brighter smile continues.
