“Seeking recognition and respect.” This was the driving force behind a group of pathologists. They gathered in Chicago in December 1946 to form what is now known as the College of American Pathologists.

The College of American Pathologists or CAP formed at a meeting. The meeting took place on December 12 and 13 1946. It happened right here in Chicago. Dr Frank W Hartman was elected as its first president. This marked the beginning of an organization. It was dedicated to improving laboratory medicine in the United States.

The College of American Pathologists quickly became a leading voice. It advocated for pathologists. The CAP was incorporated in Illinois on May 14 1947. By October 27 of the same year the CAP approved its Code of Ethics.

In its early years the College of American Pathologists focused on defining pathology. The CAP wanted to move the specialty forward. In 1949, the College of American Pathologists conducted its first chemistry Survey. This assessed the accuracy of lab work. Around 500 participants sent in results.

The College of American Pathologists has always championed quality. It accredits labs. The CAP launched its Inspection and Accreditation Program. This happened before Congress even mandated one. The CAP Foundation was established in 1963.

The College of American Pathologists opened a Washington DC office in 1970. This amplified its voice. The CAP ensured pathologists’ concerns reached the nation’s capital.

In 1986 the College of American Pathologists launched CAP Today. This publication keeps members informed.

In 1996, the College of American Pathologists celebrated its 50th anniversary. It launched its website cap.org.

In 2001, the College of American Pathologists held its first See Test and Treat event. This offered free cervical cancer screenings. It helped underserved women. The College of American Pathologists introduced a new brand in 2014. This refreshed its identity.

In 2020, the College of American Pathologists provided resources. It assisted members facing COVID-19.

In 2021, the College of American Pathologists marked its 75th anniversary. It published “In Further Pursuit of Excellence”. This book covers the years 1997-2021. The College of American Pathologists is still going strong today. It continues to evolve with the times. It supports pathologists. It improves patient care around the world.
