Nestled in Botafogo, the Colégio Santo Inácio whispers tales of resilience and reinvention. This isn’t just any school. It’s a phoenix, risen from the ashes of its predecessor on Morro do Castelo. Imagine Rio de Janeiro in 1567. The French are ousted, the city shifts to Morro do Castelo, and there, amidst the upheaval, the Jesuit College is born. This, the first school in Rio, focused initially on catechizing the indigenous population. Colégio Santo Inácio carries the torch of this legacy. Fast forward to 1759. The Jesuits are expelled, their college transformed into a military building. Though the Society of Jesus is restored in 1814, they never reclaim their Morro do Castelo home. The hill itself is later demolished, making way for the 1922 Centennial Exposition. Yet, pieces of the past endure. A bell and baroque sculptures from the original church found a new home at Colégio Santo Inácio. Even the columns and facade of the present-day Church of St. Ignatius, initially intended for the lost Morro do Castelo church, stand as silent witnesses to history. The Colégio Santo Inácio story takes root again in 1900, in a Jesuit residence in Flamengo. Father Alexandre Diomedi gathers boys for music lessons and communion preparation. This small seed blossoms in 1903, when the Jesuits move to Botafogo. They establish the Externato Santo Inácio on Rua São Clemente, initially with just nine students. The phoenix truly takes flight. By 1905, the school boasts 92 students. In 1909, expansion becomes necessary. A new wing is added. In 1942, the school is renamed Colégio Santo Inácio. Today, this institution, a testament to perseverance, educates thousands, from primary to secondary levels, even offering night classes for adults. It has nurtured minds like Vinicius de Moraes, Cazuza, Paulo Coelho, and Arminio Fraga. As you stand before Colégio Santo Inácio, remember. It’s more than bricks and mortar. It’s a living story, echoing the city’s own journey of transformation and endurance.
