In 1889, a grand palace in Rio de Janeiro was purchased for a hefty sum of 220 contos de réis. This marked the birth of the Colégio Militar do Rio de Janeiro (CMRJ). The Imperial College Militar, as it was initially known, held its first classes on May 6th in the opulent Palacete do Barão de Itacurussá. The Colégio Militar do Rio de Janeiro wasn’t just any school. It was the very first military college in Brazil, a testament to the nation’s evolving identity. The college’s creation was a direct result of Thomaz Coelho’s tireless efforts, finally realized with Imperial Decree 10.202. Originally, this magnificent institution was intended for the sons of military personnel. However, a century later, the Colégio Militar do Rio de Janeiro opened its doors to young women. This momentous occasion took place in 1989, coinciding with the school’s centennial celebration. In 2005, Priscila Alvares made history as the first female colonel-student. Letícia Cardoso continued this legacy in 2015, becoming the first girl to enter the prestigious Pantheon Literário of the Colégio Militar do Rio de Janeiro. Today, the CMRJ continues to uphold its tradition of excellence. It remains a highly sought-after institution, preparing young minds for both academic and military pursuits. It stands as a symbol of discipline, tradition, and the pursuit of knowledge. The Colégio Militar do Rio de Janeiro is more than just a school. It is a living testament to Brazil’s rich history and a beacon of hope for its future.
