Picture the grand entrance of the Colégio de Santa Doroteia. This impressive building stands as a testament to Lisbon’s rich history. Its story began much earlier than its official opening.

In 1935 the Sisters of Saint Dorothy acquired the Quinta das Calvanas. This estate stretched from Alameda das Linhas de Torres to the airport. It was quite a vast property. They transferred their school from Sintra to this location. The Colegio de Santa Doroteia opened its doors in 1936. Initially it only housed boarding students. Around 134 girls attended in those early years.

The official inauguration took place on February 6 1937. This was a significant day as it coincided with the feast day of Saint Dorothy. The Ministry of Education officially recognized the school. Jorge Segurado designed the impressive building we see today. The school was originally for girls only.

In 1973 things changed. The Colégio de Santa Doroteia became a day and boarding school for girls. Pre-school and primary levels were transferred to Externato do Parque. Secondary education was temporarily discontinued. By 1976 it was a co-educational day and boarding school. It adapted to the changing times.

A major expansion happened in 1992. The new sports pavilion was inaugurated. Secondary education was reinstated in 1993. The Colégio de Santa Doroteia continued to evolve.

Today the Colégio de Santa Doroteia boasts many amenities. There is a cafeteria a bar a sports pavilion three playing fields one of which is covered. There is also a gymnasium and a large auditorium. Classrooms are spread across four floors. On the ground floor you’ll find a games room music rooms computer labs and art studios.

The Colégio de Santa Doroteia remains dedicated to its founding principles. These include the intellectual human and Christian formation of its students. It fosters a dialogue between culture life and faith. It is more than just a school. It’s a community. A place where students have flourished for generations. It’s a place with a vibrant history and a bright future. The legacy of the Sisters of Saint Dorothy continues.
