Amidst the bustling energy of Buenos Aires, stands the Colegio de Abogados. This institution has witnessed the ebb and flow of legal history since its inception in 1913. The Colegio de Abogados de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of law and justice in Argentina. Originally, the Colegio de Abogados was founded much earlier, in 1857. Its first president, Dr. Eduardo Acevedo, played a key role in shaping Argentine legal thought. This early iteration of the Colegio even advised President Domingo Faustino Sarmiento on the adoption of Dalmacio Vélez Sársfield’s Civil Code. However, this first incarnation of the Colegio dissolved in 1871. The Colegio de Abogados as we know it today was reborn in 1913. A group of 132 prominent lawyers, including figures like Jorge Argerich and Estanislao Zeballos, signed the founding act. Their vision was to create a body that would uphold ethical standards, defend the rights of lawyers, and contribute to the advancement of justice. The Colegio initially resided on Tucumán street, then moved to offices within the Palace of Justice. Finally, in 1940, it found its permanent home at Montevideo 640. Within these walls resides a treasure trove of legal knowledge. The library boasts over 30,000 volumes. Some date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. The Colegio also houses a hall named after the renowned jurist Dalmacio Vélez Sársfield and a free legal clinic. The Colegio remains a vibrant hub of legal activity. Its internal commissions address a wide range of legal topics, fostering continuous learning and exchange among its members. The Colegio also publishes “La Hoja,” a digital magazine providing legal insights, commentary, and news about the institution’s activities. Each year, it awards the Diploma of Academic Excellence to outstanding law students in Buenos Aires. The Colegio de Abogados stands as more than just a professional organization. It’s a historical landmark. It embodies the pursuit of justice, the evolution of law, and the dedication of generations of lawyers in Argentina.
