Why was Colbert, a man born into a family of merchants, chosen to manage the finances of a king? Right here in Paris, stands a testament to the legacy of Jean-Baptiste Colbert. He wasn’t just a building, he was the financial mastermind behind the grandeur of Louis XIV’s reign. Born in Reims in 1619, Colbert rose through the ranks, catching the eye of the powerful Cardinal Mazarin. When Mazarin died, Colbert shrewdly secured his position with Louis XIV by revealing the location of the Cardinal’s hidden wealth. Appointed Controller-General of Finances in 1665, Colbert inherited a kingdom on the brink of bankruptcy. He saw the solution in trade and industry. He reformed the tax system, making it fairer and more efficient, much to the annoyance of the tax-exempt nobility. Colbert believed in a strong domestic industry. He nurtured French craftsmanship, established royal factories for everything from tapestries to mirrors, even luring skilled workers from other nations. Colbert’s efforts weren’t confined to French shores. He understood the importance of a global presence, establishing trading companies to reach markets in the East and West Indies. Colbert’s vision transformed France into an economic powerhouse, his influence shaping not just the nation’s treasury but also its cultural landscape. He was a patron of the arts and sciences, founding academies and enriching the Louvre’s collection. Colbert’s legacy lived on, his economic policies influencing figures like Alexander Hamilton, the first U.S. Treasury Secretary. So, the next time you admire the splendour of Louis XIV’s reign, remember the man behind the money, Jean-Baptiste Colbert, a merchant’s son who shaped a nation’s destiny.
