Nestled between Versailles and Rambouillet, the Coignières train station hums with activity. But let’s step back in time, to a Coignières before the shriek of the train whistle. This area, now bustling with commuters, was once a quiet plateau, marked by the gentle flow of the Mauldre River. Coignières, even then, held a strategic position. It rested on the dividing line of the Yvette and Mauldre rivers, a crucial crossroads on the route from Paris to the fertile Beauce region and beyond to Spain. As early as the 8th century, Coignières, known then as Cotonarias, appeared in historical records. In 768, King Pépin the Bref gifted the village to the Abbey of Saint-Denis. Coignières’s name itself speaks to its agricultural past. Derived from the Old French word for quince, “cooin,” Coignières likely translates to “quince orchards,” painting a picture of a landscape dotted with the fragrant fruit trees. By the 13th century, Coignières had grown into two distinct parts: Coignières-les-Vieils, clustered around the church of Saint-Germain-d’Auxerre, and Coignières-les-Neuves, stretching along the present-day route nationale 10. This road, now a busy thoroughfare, was once the main artery connecting Paris and Chartres, and Coignières thrived as a vital stopping point. You can still find remnants of this era at number 99 route de Chartres, a former coaching inn built in 1706. Initially intended as a temporary replacement for the Trappes relay station, it soon became clear that Coignières needed its own permanent inn to accommodate the steady stream of travelers. The arrival of the railway in the mid-19th century marked a turning point. The Coignières train station was inaugurated, ushering in a new era of connectivity and transforming the village’s role. While Coignières continued to evolve, becoming part of the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines new town project in the 1970s, it managed to retain a unique blend of rural charm and modern development. The church of Saint-Germain-d’Auxerre, a beautiful example of Romanesque architecture dating back to the 13th century, still stands as a testament to Coignières’s rich history. Its 15th-century stained-glass window, classified as a historical monument, casts colorful light on the stories of the past. So, as you stand here in modern Coignières, imagine the clatter of horse-drawn carriages, the weary travelers seeking rest at the coaching inn, and the quince orchards that gave this town its name. Coignières, a place where history and progress intersect, offering a glimpse into the past while embracing the future.
