Were these walls witness to whispered secrets? The Cobangbang Ancestral House stands before us a heritage house frozen in time. Built in 1930 by Aurelio Cobangbang it is a testament to a bygone era. Welcome to a journey through history right here in Manila.

The Cobangbang House is located in Santa Ana. Santa Ana was the only district in Manila spared from destruction during World War II. Imagine fleeing the chaos and finding refuge here among these ancestral homes.

Look closely at the architecture of the Cobangbang Ancestral House. It is a two-story structure with a mezzanine on the ground floor. Notice the board panels on the facade. They are arranged horizontally a distinctive feature of the house. The lateral walls are made of reinforced concrete showcasing the blend of materials used in its construction.

The roof and canopies are crafted from galvanized iron sheets. The eaves feature cut-and-pierced metal coffers adding a decorative touch. These pierced soffits aren’t just for show. They provide ventilation a clever design element.

Let’s step inside an area of the Cobangbang House. The mezzanine entrance is on the right side next to the garage. Inside you might find an antique bed made from Narra tree. Hardwood cabinets stand as silent guardians of memories.

Terrazzo stairs lead to the second-level porch. Over time three steps have been buried due to road elevation. This subtle change speaks volumes about the passage of time and urban development.

On the porch take note of the wooden-framed glass swing-out windows. One faces the street and another the lateral side. Glass transoms sit above the windows while metal grills adorn the walls underneath. Ornamental brackets add character to the posts at the entrance to the second floor.

Original machuca tiles grace the second floor. Antique furniture and furnishings tell stories of generations past. A round dining table crafted from the root of a Narra tree is a remarkable piece. It was built at the same time as the house.

Capiz windows are on the left lateral portion of the house. Rare patterned glass windows are also on display. A tracery transom separates the dining area from the receiving area.

Since its construction in 1930 the Cobangbang House has remained untouched by renovations. This is according to Dr. Amelia Cobangbang, daughter of Aurelio Cobangbang. Her dedication has preserved this treasure for us to appreciate.

The Cobangbang Ancestral House stands as a reminder of Manila’s rich heritage. It survived war and the relentless march of time. It offers us a glimpse into the lives of those who came before. Take a moment to appreciate the details. Imagine the stories these walls could tell.
