Has anyone ever felt the pull of a place they’ve never been before? That’s how Cở Lâm Pagoda called to me. Cở Lâm Pagoda isn’t just a temple. It’s a vibrant hub nestled in a serene oasis in Seattle, reflecting the rich tapestry of Vietnamese traditions and Buddhist practices. The main entrance welcomes you in, inviting meditation and reflection. And the grounds? Beautifully maintained, perfect for leisurely strolls along the small trail.

The Cở Lâm Pagoda experience is multi-faceted. The main hall offers a space for prayer. A cafeteria serves delightful vegetarian meals. And tucked away, amidst lush greenery, lies a hidden gem: a reclining Buddha. For those seeking breathtaking views, the hilltop location, especially vibrant on sunny days, provides a picturesque backdrop. The colorful ambiance during special occasions like Tet transforms the pagoda into a cherished location for community celebrations.

Cở Lâm Pagoda’s architecture is beautiful. Its commitment to cleanliness and maintenance ensures a peaceful environment. One of the temple’s highlights is its terraced garden. It boasts an impressive collection of Buddhist statues and art, likely the largest in the greater Seattle area. The garden ascends above the temple itself, shaded by trees and offering many benches for contemplation. This serene space provides a stark contrast to the bustling traffic on nearby Martin Luther King Way.

The newest statue in this collection is a small rendition of the Buddha as a young boy, one arm raised high. Another striking sculpture, about 50 feet long, runs along the temple’s west side. It depicts key moments in the Buddha’s life, such as his departure from his father’s castle to seek enlightenment. A massive portrayal of the cycles of life, featuring figures around a huge globe, is also included. The cycle progresses from infancy to adulthood, even featuring images of historical figures like Richard Nixon and George Washington, before continuing into old age and death. A white Kwan Yin statue, about 10 feet high, and a huge dragon also grace this area.

As you climb the hill, murals depicting the Buddha’s life unfold, accompanied by explanations. Panels set into the stone offer wisdom from his teachings. A thousand-armed Chenrezig statue, representing compassion, sits in a glass case. Colorful statues of the 18 arhants, some with less-than-perfect pasts, are scattered throughout. One of the garden’s highlights is a 26-foot reclining Buddha, sheltered under a translucent roof. This serene white figure symbolizes the potential for awakening and illustrates the Buddha’s passing. The upper level houses a life-sized golden standing Buddha, donated by Ajahn Ritthi of Wat Attamayatarama monastery in Woodinville. Cở Lâm Pagoda is more than just a place of worship. It’s a bridge between cultures, a source of spiritual nourishment, and a testament to the beauty of Vietnamese culture and spirituality in the heart of Seattle.
