Considering a place where quiet luxury meets stunning views? That’s Clyde Hill. The story of Clyde Hill is fascinating. This affluent community began as a farming area. It transformed into one of Washington’s most desirable residential locations.

Clyde Hill’s origins trace back to Patrick Downey. He was an Irish immigrant. In 1882, he homesteaded 160 acres on the southern slope. Downey’s arrival marked the first settlement. This area is now Clyde Hill.

Two versions exist about how Clyde Hill received its name. One says Downey named a ferry landing “Clyde Landing”. It was named after the River Clyde in Scotland. The community then adopted the name. Another version claims a local pioneer named Clyde Road after the Firth of Clyde. This is a body of water off Scotland’s coast. The name then became connected with the community.

By the early 1950s, development pressures increased. Clyde Hill wanted to maintain its large lot sizes. King County allowed smaller lots. Incorporation became the answer. Residents voted to incorporate as the Town of Clyde Hill in 1953.

Kenneth “Ken” Day became the town’s first mayor. The town council ensured minimum lot sizes of 20,000 square feet. This is a key feature of Clyde Hill. Today smaller lots that existed before are grandfathered in.

Clyde Hill faced an unusual situation in 1975. A mayoral election resulted in a tie. A coin toss determined the winner. Miles Nelson won the election.

Today Clyde Hill is known for its beautiful homes. It has custom designs on spacious lots. The city’s real estate reflects its affluence. In 2014, Business Insider named Clyde Hill the most affluent small city in Washington. The average median household income was very high.

Clyde Hill offers essential services. These include a police department and fire services. Children attend local public schools through middle school. High school students attend school in Bellevue.

Clyde Hill maintains a unique identity. It is primarily residential. There are limited commercial zones. The city values its quiet atmosphere. Clyde Hill was voted as one of the ‘Tree Cities of the US’ in 2018. This highlights its commitment to green spaces.

So, as you stand here, remember the journey of Clyde Hill. It transformed from farmland to an affluent residential haven. Its stunning views, large lots, and commitment to community make it a truly special place.
