Doesn’t the name Clover Park evoke images of sprawling green fields? This suburb of Auckland has a fascinating story. It is a story of community, sports, and transformation. Clover Park is governed by the Auckland Council. It sits in the Manukau ward.

Let’s step back to the mid-20th century. Clover Park began as farmland. In the 1960s and 70s, the land was acquired for a new purpose. This marked the beginning of the Manukau Sports Bowl.

The Manukau Sports Bowl is a major landmark in Clover Park. Development accelerated in the late 1980s. A greyhound track and velodrome were built. The Manukau Velodrome was built for the 1990 Commonwealth Games. It cost an estimated $4,349,000. Track cycling events were held there. In 2003, the velodrome was part of the Rally New Zealand course.

The Auckland Greyhound Track hosted its first race in December 1989. The cost to build the track was $3.2 million. However, times change. In late 2023, the local board decided to replace the greyhound track with an athletics track. The Auckland Greyhound Racing Club is negotiating a move.

Since 1996, the Manukau Sports Bowl hosts Polyfest. Polyfest is the world’s largest Pacific dance festival. It attracts up to 100,000 visitors each year.

Clover Park is more than just sports. It is a diverse and growing community. The population was estimated to be 9,770 in June 2024. Clover Park covers an area of 2.11 square kilometers.

Clover Park has several schools. Redoubt North School is a full primary school. Kia Aroha College is a secondary school. Some classes are taught in Māori and Pacific languages. Kia Aroha College was formed in 2011. Clover Park Middle School merged with Te Whānau o Tupuranga to create it.

The Clover Park Community House has an interesting past. Built in 1915 as a private residence, it was purchased in 1976. It is now run by Community Builders New Zealand Trust.

Today, Clover Park continues to evolve. The average house value is $815,500. The median rent is $680 per week. Clover Park reflects the changing face of Auckland. It embraces its history while looking forward.

So, as we leave Clover Park, remember its journey. From farmland to sports hub to a vibrant community. It is a suburb with heart and soul.
