Looking out over the vibrant green space of Clinton Field Park, it’s hard to imagine the grandeur that once stood here. This small park, nestled in the heart of the Whittier neighborhood, has a fascinating past. You see, before those swings and slides, a grand mansion stood here, a symbol of wealth and power. It was called Fair Oaks, a sprawling Italianate home built in 1858 on ten acres of land.

This place was once a center of cultural life, a place where art and nature intertwined. Clinton Morrison, a prominent figure in Minneapolis history, donated the estate for the creation of an art museum. The park was dedicated to his father, Dorilus Morrison, a founding member of the Minneapolis Park Commission.

The mansion was sadly demolished in 1924, but thankfully, a new playground was built in its place. Named Clinton Field in honor of Morrison and his family, the park became a cherished gathering place for the community. Today, Clinton Field Park is a colorful and vibrant place, with a large playground, basketball court, and volleyball area. It’s a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the people of Minneapolis, a reminder that even in the face of change, there’s always room for community and creativity.
