“What if a former gasworks could teach us about climate change?” That’s the story of Istanbul’s Climate Museum. It is located in the repurposed Hasanpaşa Gazhanesi. This museum tackles the urgent climate crisis. It explores the causes and devastating effects of climate change.
The Climate Museum opened in April 2023. It resides in two buildings of the Museum Gazhane complex. These buildings once purified gas for the city. Now, they host a permanent exhibition. The exhibition’s theme is the “Climate Crisis”.
Back in 1892, Hasanpaşa Gazhanesi met the energy needs of Istanbul’s Anatolian side. By 1993, the factory was obsolete. Natural gas became widespread. The complex was abandoned.
In 2021, the factory was reborn as Museum Gazhane. Do[x]architecture, an Istanbul-based firm, transformed the interiors. Dicle B. Özdemir and Kadir Uyanık led the project. They converted the former gas purification buildings. The result was a modern museum space.
The Climate Museum highlights the increasing use of fossil fuels since the Industrial Revolution. Ironically, the museum stands in a former fossil fuel plant. This creates a powerful self-criticism.

The museum’s design allows for easy updates. The information boards can be easily separated from the structure. This minimizes waste when data changes.
