Is it possible for a building to hold onto secrets of royal visits and ghostly encounters? That is Clifton Hall for you. Let me share its story.

Clifton Hall has stood here for centuries. It began as a fortified tower house. It was meant for both defense and living. The de Clifton family held this manor from the late 13th century to the mid-20th century.

Now, take a closer look. Imagine Clifton Hall in its prime. It was more than just a building. It was the heart of a manor. The manor of Clifton was noted in the Domesday Book of 1086.

Let’s step back in time to the late 13th century. Gervase de Clifton bought the manor. He took the name de Clifton from his new home. His family had been in this area for a long time. Alvaredus, warden of Nottingham Castle, was one of his ancestors.

The Hall saw many important figures. King Charles I stayed here in 1632. Sir Gervase Clifton extended the stables for the royal visit. John Smythson designed the stables. He was the son of Robert Smythson, a famous architect.

Clifton Hall was rebuilt between 1778 and 1797. Sir Gervase Clifton hired John Carr of York. Carr was a leading architect. The tower of the original house was likely demolished during this time. An octagonal domed hall was kept during the rebuilding. Sir Robert Clifton built it around 1750.

But there is a darker side to Clifton Hall. It is known for being haunted. Stories of ghosts go back to when it was a school.

In 2007, Anwar Rashid, a millionaire, bought the South Wing. He and his family moved in. They soon experienced strange events. They heard knocks and voices. His wife saw her daughter downstairs at 5 a.m., but she was still in bed.

The family invited paranormal investigators. Even they were scared. Drops of blood appeared on their baby’s quilt. The family left after only eight months. Rashid said the house was haunted.

After the Clifton family sold it, the Hall became a girls’ grammar school in 1958. It closed in 1976. Nottingham Trent University used it until 2002.

Today, Clifton Hall stands as a reminder of its past. It is a Grade I listed building. It is also within the Clifton Village Conservation Area. The tower wing survives well. It has many original features. Limited archaeological digs have found remains of the hall. These remains show how Clifton Hall developed.

As you leave, remember the layers of history within these walls. From royal visits to ghostly encounters, Clifton Hall has seen it all. It is a place where the past is still alive.
