From an old cow shed it all began. This is Cliff Walk Church. Can you believe it? Founded in 1873 this humble beginning transformed into a vibrant community hub. A family’s unwavering faith brought the church to life amidst the bustling construction of London’s East End docks and factories. They came to witness to the workers. Imagine the energy the sounds the smells of that era.
Cliff Walk Church wasn’t always on Cliff Walk. It started in Cliff Street. Soon a small chapel was built next door. The 1950s brought massive changes. The council’s redevelopment reshaped the neighbourhood. A new chapel and rooms emerged on what was renamed Cliff Walk. This area still bears the marks of its Victorian past. It’s a blend of social housing private rentals and owner-occupied homes. A true reflection of the diverse community the church serves.
The church isn’t just bricks and mortar. It’s a melting pot of cultures. The pupils at a nearby primary school speak over 50 languages. This reflects the vision of Cliff Walk Church. It strives to represent the diverse local population within its congregation. A remarkable feat!
For 150 years Cliff Walk Church has thrived. Leaflets from its 100th 125th and 150th anniversaries tell the story. They capture the changes in church life over the years. One thing remained constant however. The love of God for each individual.
Originally linked with the Peculiar People a group of churches across East London and Essex the church later became part of the Union of Evangelical Churches UEC. It’s a registered charity and limited company. Today the UEC boasts 18 churches. Each is autonomous yet united under the UEC’s constitution and beliefs. Cliff Walk Church is also part of the Evangelical Alliance and Transform Newham a network of like-minded churches in Newham. It’s a testament to its commitment to its local community and beyond.
Pastors Leandro Merigio and Trevor Matthews lead the congregation. They shepherd this diverse flock. Their dedication guides the church in serving God and its community. Sunday services are held at 11 am in English and 6 30 pm in Portuguese. They’re even live-streamed on Facebook. Prayer Bible study and fellowship enrich the week. Activities are announced weekly on Facebook or email. The Sunday sermons are also available on YouTube.
