“Seventeen seventy-eight,” the stonemason muttered, etching the date into the cornerstone of the building. We stand now before the Cleveland Street Workhouse. It stands as a stark reminder of a time when poverty cast a long shadow over London.

Built for the parish of St. Paul Covent Garden, the Cleveland Street Workhouse initially aimed to house 200 of the city’s poor and infirm. The harsh realities of the time, however, soon forced them to increase capacity. The building’s history is one of change, evolving alongside London’s complex healthcare system. From a workhouse under the Old Poor Law, it became the Strand Union Workhouse, then a hospital annexe, and finally, a bustling outpatient department.

Now, you might wonder about life within these walls. Imagine the echo of hundreds of footsteps on the cold stone floors. Picture the pale faces of the sick, the weary sighs of the overworked. One resident physician, Joseph Rogers, documented the grim conditions he encountered. He wrote of drunken nurses, a damp and crowded nursery, and the ever-present stench of laundry steam rising from the basement.

Yet, even amidst the hardship, glimmers of hope emerged. Social reformer Louisa Twining, appalled by the neglect she witnessed, spearheaded change. Her efforts, alongside the exposé published in the medical journal “The Lancet,” led to reforms that improved the lives of the workhouse’s residents.

Today, the Cleveland Street Workhouse stands silent. Its doors are closed. But its story, like those of the countless souls who passed through it, deserves to be remembered.
