Seventy-two-hundred-and-eight students. That’s how many children call Clendon Park School home. This isn’t just any school. It’s a vibrant hub nestled in Manurewa Auckland. Clendon Park School opened in 1971. It wasn’t initially called Clendon Park. Its original name was Wiri. That didn’t last long. The name didn’t quite fit. The school wasn’t near Wiri. Its zone simply included Wiri Mountain. Clendon Park was a much better fit everyone agreed.

From the very start Clendon Park School was bustling with life. More than 210 pupils showed up on the first day. That was more than expected. The library became a classroom immediately. The school wasn’t even big enough. Tenders went out for more classrooms almost right away. The official opening was delayed until the new classrooms were complete.

The school has a fascinating history. A massive pile of topsoil nicknamed Mt Clendon was a unique feature. This wasn’t there for long. It was used to improve other school grounds. By the late 1970s the school was at its peak. Over 800 students attended. The opening of Roscommon School and changes in the area brought the numbers down.

Clendon Park School boasts more than just classrooms. It has impressive facilities. Twenty permanent classrooms and five relocatable ones offer ample space. A new administration block opened in 2003. Helen Clark the Prime Minister at the time did the honors. The school also features a Communications Centre which houses the library and IT room. There’s also an art store a maths store a PE shed and much more. The swimming pool complex and hall are impressive additions. They were funded through local fundraising.

Two 26-seater buses were purchased in 2006. This greatly increased the range of school trips students could take. This broadened their horizons. This improved student learning experiences. Bilingual units are a significant part of the school. The Maori bilingual unit Te Whanau Awhina began in 2000. The Samoan bilingual unit Tautua Mo Tupulaga started in 2006. Both units often surpass national standards.

Clendon Park School is much more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a place of learning growth and community. It has a rich history and vibrant present. It serves a diverse population with numerous facilities. It’s a place where children thrive. This school is a true testament to the spirit of Manurewa.
