Curious about what makes Clark Memorial Church so special? This church is not just a building. It is a vibrant piece of South St. Paul’s history and a welcoming beacon for all.

Clark Memorial Church has deep roots in this community. The church’s story began in May 1887. A small group gathered in the Clark and Company store for worship. By October, they had dedicated their first church building. They called it South Park Community Church.

In 1931, the church changed its name to Clark Memorial Church. This honored C.W. Clark. He donated the land for the church building. The building was expanded and renovated over the years.

Clark Memorial Church faced challenges. Fires partially destroyed it in 1934 and 1947. Yet, each time, the congregation rebuilt. They enlarged the church after the 1947 fire.

A significant milestone occurred in 1962. Members voted to become part of the United Church of Christ. UCC is a progressive denomination.

Clark Memorial UCC became the first Open and Affirming congregation in South St. Paul in 2004. It welcomes all people regardless of race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation. This commitment to inclusivity defines the church’s spirit.

In September 2013, Grace Community United Church of Christ joined Clark Memorial. Grace Community was the first African-American United Church of Christ congregation in Minnesota. The merger created a diverse and united faith community.

The two churches, one with a predominantly Black congregation and one with a predominantly white congregation, came together. Clark-Grace was formed. It is a wonderful community that welcomes persons of any color or ethnicity to celebrate together.

Leading this community is Reverend Oliver White. He has a remarkable history. He was the church organist for Aretha Franklin’s choir. He also played piano for Motown artists. Reverend White met Dr. Martin Luther King during the Freedom March in Detroit in 1963. He also met Archbishop Desmond Tutu in 1989 in South Africa.

Reverend White stood up for gay marriage. This stance cost him dearly both personally and professionally. Atlantic Magazine listed him as one of the “Ten Bravest Thinkers in the World” in 2012.

In February 2015, the congregation created a joint mission statement. “We are a faith-based, progressive community with historical roots that provides education, teaching, mentoring and community service throughout the Kingdom of God.”

In 2010, the Green Team installed a rain garden. They added a native garden in the boulevard. These enhance the church’s surroundings.

Clark Memorial Church stands as a testament to faith, resilience, and inclusivity. It is a place where all are welcome. It is a community dedicated to service and justice. As you leave, consider the enduring legacy of Clark Memorial Church. Its open arms and commitment to progress continue to shape South St. Paul.
