Built from unique hollow ceramic blocks Clark Cottage stands proudly in Hobsonville. This charming single-storey villa boasts Italianate architecture. It’s a testament to the ingenuity of Thomas Edwin Clark. He pioneered the innovative building technique. The cottage is one of only a few structures using these special bricks. They measure 658mm x 214mm. Imagine the effort involved in constructing this home brick by brick.

Clark Cottage wasn’t always known by its current name. It started life as ‘Love Cottage’. This charming name reflects its origins. Thomas Edwin Clark and Margaret Morrison married in 1908. The cottage’s construction likely followed their wedding. A lovely magnolia tree stands sentinel. It was likely planted in 1908 by Margaret herself.

The cottage’s history extends far beyond its charming exterior. It has seen multiple owners. Harry Cater farmed the land in 1893. Rice Owen Clark II acquired the property later in 1895. Thomas Edwin Clark inherited it. He later transferred ownership to his wife Margaret. The property changed hands numerous times. William Henry Madill and William Otto owned it. Finally James Stirling Duke purchased it in 1971. He named the surrounding land Monterey Park.

During Duke’s ownership the cottage served as a stud farm. Suffolk sheep grazed the five hectares. The Evans family bought the property in 1986. They established the Monterey Park Motor Museum and Model World. They undertook significant restoration work. The rear verandah removed by the Ottos was rebuilt.

Clark Cottage’s story continues. Summerset Holdings acquired the land. They planned a retirement village. The cottage underwent a nine-month restoration. This cost a remarkable NZ$1.7 million. Each brick was carefully examined and replaced if needed. Summerset’s dedication to preserving this piece of history earned them an award.

Today Clark Cottage stands as a symbol of Hobsonville’s heritage. Its unique construction and fascinating history make it a captivating landmark. It is a beautiful example of how history lives on in the bricks and mortar. A true testament to the dedication and artistry of those who built and preserved it. The legacy of the Clark family and the skilled artisans who meticulously restored it is felt within its walls. The story of Clark Cottage is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a tale of love innovation and preservation.
