In 1973, a vacant lot in Chicago transformed. It became Claremont Park. The community surrounding Claremont Avenue wanted a park. They got their wish. The park sits at 2334 W. Flournoy Street. Today, it’s a vibrant playlot filled with slides, swings, and climbing equipment. Claremont Park is relatively small, covering just a little over an acre. It was renovated in 2012 as part of the Chicago Plays! program. While Claremont Park itself doesn’t host organized activities, nearby Altgeld Park offers a variety of programs. You can swim, work out, or just relax. The park’s name has a unique connection to maritime history. Claremont Avenue, which lends its name to the park, was named after the Clermont. This steamboat holds a special place in history. It was the first commercially successful steamboat. Robert Fulton, the inventor, designed the Clermont. Its maiden voyage in 1807 traveled up the Hudson River. The trip from New York City to Albany took a whopping 62 hours. Imagine the journey back then!
