Have you ever walked down a street lined with old, red brick houses? In the heart of Lambeth, south of central Clapham and west of Brixton, stands Clapham Park, a neighbourhood full of history and charming streets. Clapham Park was once an ambitious project, started by Thomas Cubitt, who bought the land back in 1825. He had grand plans to build large, detached houses in his signature Italianate villa style, each with its own extensive grounds. However, World War I put a stop to his plans.

Many of the original houses were demolished during the war, and the north part of Clapham Park was then redeveloped by the London County Council in the 1940s. The council built large blocks of flats in a modern style, a stark contrast to the original grand houses. The most prominent redevelopment is the Clapham Park West Estate, which includes the remains of Oakfield House, once a stately home that sat on a beautiful estate.

Now, a walk through Clapham Park reveals a mixture of grand old buildings and the remnants of grand houses, and the streets boast elegant Victorian buildings. Look closely, however, and you can still find traces of Cubitt’s grand estate. Even though the original plans never quite took shape, Clapham Park still stands as a testament to the grand ambitions of the past, with its elegant streets and historical beauty.
