Did Çivizade Mescidi always stand here, a silent witness to centuries of change? No. The Çivizade Mescidi you see today is a relatively recent reconstruction. Its story begins much earlier, in the 16th century, during the reign of Sultan Murat III. Çivizade Şeyh Mehmet Efendi, a prominent Şeyhülislam, originally commissioned this small mosque. The name “Çivizade” itself hints at a fascinating family connection. It also points to another mosque. Mehmet Efendi’s daughter built a mosque bearing the same name in Kadınlar Pazarı. The original 16th-century Çivizade Mescidi, sadly, met with an unfortunate fate. It collapsed not long after its construction. Kalburcu Mehmet Efendi later rebuilt it, but time took its toll once more. By 1990, the mosque had deteriorated significantly. It was then reconstructed with reinforced concrete, resulting in the structure we see today. The modern Çivizade Mescidi stands within a neat perimeter wall, separated from the bustling street. A courtyard leads to the mosque’s entrance. The building itself has a rectangular layout, built vertically. The son cemaat area, a space for latecomers to pray, is enclosed by glass windows. Both the main prayer hall and the son cemaat area share a single roof. This wooden roof is covered with traditional tiles. Unfortunately, details of the mosque’s original design have been lost due to the reconstructions. We can only imagine the intricate details that once graced this place of worship. Today, Çivizade Mescidi stands well-maintained, offering a quiet sanctuary amidst the vibrant city. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and the community that keeps its flame alive.
