Picture this a unique neighborhood in Buenos Aires. Ciudad Jardín Lomas del Palomar. A planned community unlike any other in South America.

This is Ciudad Jardín Lomas del Palomar. Founded in 1944 by German entrepreneur Erich Zeyen. He envisioned a place blending urban convenience with the tranquility of nature. He was inspired by the Garden City movement of Ebenezer Howard. Zeyen meticulously documented his journey. His memoirs detail everything from initial challenges to the booming growth. From only 120 cows grazing on the land to over 12600 residents within just 12 years.

Zeyen’s creation was truly remarkable. He established a system of low-interest loans for homes. This made homeownership possible for a diverse group of people. Italians Swiss Spaniards Belgians and Ukrainians all contributed to this vibrant community. Ciudad Jardín even has its own hymn flag and coat of arms reflecting its unique identity.

The street layout is a testament to Zeyen’s vision. Curving streets respect the original tree plantation. This creates a charming almost labyrinthine effect. Many streets are named after aviation pioneers. This is a nod to the nearby Military College.

The original homes were simple Californian-style chalets. They featured porches living rooms small kitchens and two bedrooms. Later homes were built but efforts were made to preserve the original charm. In 2019 the neighborhood was declared an Urban Protection Area. This ensures the preservation of its unique character.

There have been challenges. Some lament the loss of the historic Takú bar. It has been replaced by a fast-food chain. But the spirit of Ciudad Jardín endures. A community that values its history its cultural diversity and its unique blend of urban and rural life. Residents actively work to preserve their heritage. Their efforts ensure Ciudad Jardín remains a captivating place. A place that stands as a testament to the power of community and the enduring allure of a well-planned neighborhood.

Visit Plaza de los Aviadores. See the restored FIAT G-46B airplane. It stands as a symbol of the neighborhood’s unique character. Explore the streets. Discover the stories of its diverse inhabitants.
