What if these walls could talk? The stories Cite Bourgogne could tell would fill volumes.

Cite Bourgogne is a window into Shanghai’s past. It offers a glimpse of life in the 1930s. This area provides a stark contrast to the modern metropolis.

Originally designed for middle-class families, Cite Bourgogne aimed to house around 80 households. French businessmen developed it. They envisioned typical Shikumen houses for the residents. Today, almost 450 families call Cite Bourgogne home. Government intervention has helped retain its original charm. It has preserved the look and feel throughout the years.

Now renamed Bugaoli Lane, Cite Bourgogne translates to “rising higher step by step”. This new name reflects its precious value as an antique. You can find it at the crossing of Shaanxi South Street and Jianguo West Street in the Huangpu district. Just hop on subway line 2 or 5 and disembark at Jiashan Road station. A short walk will bring you to the descriptive gate of Cite Bourgogne.

Entrance is free because people live here. Please be respectful of the residents as they go about their daily lives. A stroll through this wonderous lane takes about an hour or two.

Cite Bourgogne spans 10000 square meters. It is gated on both ends. Plaques at the entrances proudly announce “Heritage Architecture” under “Cite Bourgogne”. Bugaoli embodies lane life. Small units fostered community. Residents had kitchens and beds inside. However, they socialized outside their homes. Neighbors bonded in close quarters. This sense of community is appealing to the younger generation used to isolated apartment living. Most inhabitants of Cite Bourgogne are old souls. They didn’t want to leave their lifelong homes.

As part of the French Concession, Cite Bourgogne housed notable figures. Ba Jin, the writer, lived at No. 52 Bugaoli. Within these lanes, he penned famous works like ‘Dream of the Sea’.

Compared to the commercialized Xintiandi, Cite Bourgogne feels more authentic. Residents go about their routine business unconcerned with tourists. Observe quietly. You might catch a glimpse of modern Shanghainese lane life. Appreciate the contrast to 21st-century apartment complexes.

Shopping and eating options are limited in this less commercial area. You might find small vendors and hole-in-the-wall eateries. Enter at your own risk.

Cite Bourgogne stands as a testament to a bygone era. Its Shikumen architecture and community vibe offer a unique experience. It is a must-see for those seeking a genuine taste of Shanghai’s history. Take a moment to appreciate the simple beauty. Respect the lives within these historic walls.
