Did the stones whisper secrets of old? Here at the Cistercian Monastery – Our Lady of Dallas Chapel, they just might. The Cistercian Monastery – Our Lady of Dallas Chapel isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to faith, resilience, and a journey that spans continents. Established in 1955 in Irving, Texas, the Cistercian Monastery – Our Lady of Dallas Chapel stands as a unique landmark. It represents the enduring spirit of the Cistercian Order in North America. The story begins not here, but in Hungary, at the Zirc Abbey. This ancient monastery, a hub of learning and faith, was tragically disbanded by communist authorities in 1950. Over thirty monks, displaced and seeking refuge, found their way to the United States. Bishop Thomas K. Gorman of Dallas, in the midst of founding the University of Dallas, welcomed these monks. He recognized their rich history in education. The monks arrived in Dallas in 1954, and the Cistercian Monastery – Our Lady of Dallas Chapel was formally established in 1955. Initially, the monks served at the burgeoning University of Dallas. In 1958, a small monastery was built on the university campus. This marked the physical beginning of the Cistercian Monastery – Our Lady of Dallas Chapel. The community thrived. In 1961, they gained independence from Zirc Abbey and elected their first prior. The following year, they established the Cistercian Preparatory School, modeled after the schools they had known in Hungary. By 1964, the monastery had become an abbey, a testament to its growth and stability. The Cistercian Monastery – Our Lady of Dallas Chapel continued to evolve, welcoming American-born candidates in the 1970s. The abbey church, a stunning structure of rock-faced limestone, was completed in 1992. This architectural marvel, with its simple yet powerful design, stands as a symbol of the monastery’s enduring presence. The monks of the Cistercian Monastery – Our Lady of Dallas Chapel continue to serve at both the preparatory school and the University of Dallas, teaching and providing pastoral care. They are a living link to a rich history, a testament to the power of faith and resilience. As you stand here, at the Cistercian Monastery – Our Lady of Dallas Chapel, take a moment to reflect on the journey of these monks. Their story is etched in the very stones of this place, a quiet whisper of perseverance and devotion.
