Did the name Circus Juventas ever conjure images of gladiators and chariots? Well, banish those thoughts! Circus Juventas, right here in St. Paul, is a dazzling spectacle of a different kind. It’s the largest youth performing arts circus school in North America, a vibrant hub of energy and talent. Founded in 1994 by Dan and Betty Butler, Circus Juventas began as a modest parks and recreation program. Now, it flourishes under its own big top, a 21,000-square-foot testament to their vision. Imagine a space filled with aerialists dancing on silks, acrobats defying gravity, and jugglers weaving intricate patterns with colorful objects. Circus Juventas offers all this and more. The Butlers, former circus performers themselves, met at the Sailor Circus in Sarasota, Florida. Their shared passion for circus arts ignited the spark that would eventually become Circus Juventas. Initially called “Circus of the Star,” a nod to Minnesota’s nickname, the school quickly outgrew its early venues. The demand for their unique blend of training and performance led to the construction of their impressive big top facility in 2001. This isn’t just a place to learn circus skills. It’s a place where young people aged 3 to 21 develop self-confidence, discipline, and a deep respect for their craft. The shows produced by Circus Juventas are not your typical school productions. They are professionally staged, thematically rich spectacles that rival even Cirque du Soleil in their artistry and daring. From Greek mythology to Wild West showdowns, each performance tells a captivating story through breathtaking acts. Did you know that Circus Juventas has even faced its share of adversity? In 2009, a set of bleachers collapsed during a performance. While some minor injuries occurred, the incident served as a catalyst for improvements in safety and infrastructure. Circus Juventas isn’t just confined to its big top. Its students have performed at prestigious venues locally and have even competed internationally, showcasing their talents to the world. From the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts to the Circus Ring of Friendship Festival in Sweden, Circus Juventas performers consistently leave audiences spellbound. So, next time you hear the name Circus Juventas, remember it’s not about lions and tigers. It’s about the magic created by young artists pushing their boundaries and soaring to new heights, right here in St. Paul, Minnesota.
