Is that a scar on the wall? We’re standing right in front of Cinemall, one of Haifa’s largest shopping centers. You might know it by its previous name, Lev HaMifratz Mall. But did you know this place has a rather explosive history? Back in 1991, during the Gulf War, this very building was about to have its grand opening. Just imagine, a brand new shopping center, ready to welcome its first shoppers. Then, boom! An Iraqi Scud missile, aimed at nearby refineries, struck the mall. Thankfully, no one was hurt. The incident became a strange point of pride for the mall. A model of the missile was even put on display, attracting curious crowds. The entrepreneurs at the time even used it in their advertising, proclaiming “despite the missile, business as usual.” Today, Cinemall is a thriving hub, home to a vast selection of shops and restaurants. It also boasts the largest cinema in Israel, with 23 state-of-the-art theaters. The next time you’re strolling through Cinemall, enjoying a movie or grabbing a bite, take a moment to remember its resilient past. This place is a testament to Haifa’s enduring spirit.
