The installation of the first IMAX screen in Argentina happened in October 2005. National Amusements and Imax Corp signed a deal. The new facility became part of the Showcenter Norte.
To achieve excellent acoustics, WSDG was hired. They worked with an Argentinian architectural firm. IMAX has exacting specifications. WSDG interpreted these requirements. They designed recommendations and implemented the acoustic solutions.
The location of Cine IMAX presented unique challenges. The theater is inside a busy shopping mall. It is part of a large cinema complex. It stands only 50 meters from one of Buenos Aires’ busiest highways. Plus it is directly across the street from a local airport. These factors demanded careful acoustic design.
The acoustic solution needed to comply with international IMAX standards. IMAX has over 295 theaters in 40 countries. The design needed to provide an accurate response throughout the theater. It can accommodate 450 people. The interior had to meet IMAX aesthetic specifications. Therefore much of the isolation and acoustic treatment needed to be concealed. The theater provides heat and air conditioning for thousands of customers. WSDG had to work around challenging HVAC requirements. They ensured the system met the targeted quietness index.
Isolation was a crucial requirement. WSDG used design attributes from world-class recording studios. A floating spring-based ceiling was installed. A multiple decoupled layer system was built into the walls. This achieved a quietness index of NC 25. For acoustic treatment, WSDG used absorbing panels. They came in different thicknesses and densities. The specified IMAX reverberation times were achieved. The RT60 is 0.5 seconds.
