“Warda” that’s what the Longobards called a guard post. This brings us to the Cimitero di Garda. It is more than just a final resting place. It is a landmark connected to Garda’s history.

Garda itself owes its name to these ancient fortifications. The name “Garda” evolved from the Longobard word “warda”. This referred to a place for military observation. The high ground was perfect for spotting invaders.

Imagine those early days. The Rocca di Garda a hill overlooking the town was the site of a fortress. This fortress played a key role during the early Middle Ages.

One notable event involved Queen Adelaide of Burgundy. She was imprisoned in the Rocca. Adelaide had married Lothair of Provence the King of Italy. After his death she refused to marry the son of Duke Berengar of Ivrea. This refusal led to her imprisonment.

However Adelaide escaped. She later married Otto I who came to Italy in 953. During Otto’s reign the Rocca was dismantled. The reasons for this destruction remain unknown.

The Cimitero di Garda is linked to the town’s history. Garda was the center of an administrative district in medieval times. This district exerted power over local rural communities. In 1452 the Corporazione degli Antichi Originari was founded. It was under the protection of the Republic of Venice.

The corporation gained fishing rights in the lake. These rights were later respected by Napoleon and the Kingdom of Italy. Today descendants of the original members still share the profits from fishing leases.

While visiting the Cimitero di Garda consider Garda’s religious architecture. The Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta is one of the oldest churches in the area. It already had a chapter of canons in the 10th century. These canons served in Torri del Benaco and Bardolino. The church was rebuilt after an earthquake in 1117. It was modernized in 1824. Its bell tower dates back to 1571.

The Cimitero di Garda offers a peaceful place for reflection. The cemetery is managed by Garda Uno. This organization ensures the upkeep of the grounds. They handle burials and exhumations. Garda Uno also manages the votive lights. These lights are maintained and billed to users.

Garda Uno is active in several municipalities around Lake Garda. They provide cemetery management and lighting services. If you have questions or need assistance operators are available. For emergencies there is a toll-free number you can call.

As you explore Cimitero di Garda remember the Premio Riviera Laurence Olivier e Vivien Leigh. This award is dedicated to the two actors who stayed in San Vigilio in the 1950s.

The Cimitero di Garda is a reminder of the past. It is a place where history and remembrance meet.
