Why would a cemetery be built next to a swimming pool? This might seem like an odd pairing. However, here at the Cimetière Intercommunal de la Brie Francilienne, it became a reality. You might be surprised to learn that this cemetery wasn’t always here. In fact, it was once a simple plot of farmland. As the nearby towns of Pontault-Combault and Roissy-en-Brie grew, they faced a growing problem: their existing cemeteries were running out of space. A solution was needed, and it came in the form of a partnership. In 2010, the two towns came together to create the Cimetière Intercommunal de la Brie Francilienne. This new cemetery was built on that former farmland, right next to the Nautil, a large aquatic center. This decision, while unusual, was made because the land was ideally situated between the two towns and provided ample room for expansion. The Cimetière Intercommunal de la Brie Francilienne officially opened in January 2012 and provided a much-needed solution to the towns’ burial space shortage. It offered 1,830 new burial plots, with the possibility of expanding to 2,100 in the future. This ensured that residents of Pontault-Combault and Roissy-en-Brie would have a final resting place for many years to come.
