The silence here is broken only by birdsong. A gentle breeze rustles through the leaves in Cimetière Henri Prou. This tranquil cemetery, tucked away from the Parisian bustle, holds a poignant story. Cimetière Henri Prou is named after a man who embodied the spirit of resistance during one of France’s darkest hours: Henri Alfred Camille Prou.

Henri Prou, a dedicated employee of the Banque de France, served as mayor of Les Clayes-sous-Bois from 1935 to 1939. He was a man of the people, founding the Amicale des Employés de la Banque de France in 1920. His mayorship was tragically cut short in 1939. As World War II cast its shadow over Europe, Prou was removed from office. He was arrested under a warrant signed by the Prefect of Seine-et-Oise. Cimetière Henri Prou stands as a testament to his sacrifice. He was imprisoned first in Aincourt, then transferred to the Frontstalag 122 in Compiègne. His life ended tragically on January 11, 1942, executed by the Nazis as one of a hundred hostages at the Suresnes Fortress.

Walking through Cimetière Henri Prou, you’re not just among graves but among stories of lives lived and lost. Prou’s legacy reminds us that even in the face of immense adversity, courage can bloom. This peaceful place is more than a cemetery. It’s a place of remembrance, a poignant reminder of the human cost of conflict and the enduring power of courage.
