Unearthed secrets lie beneath our feet. This is the Cimetière du Lubatier. Or rather it was. For here stands not a cemetery but the site of one. A place where Marseille’s past rests undisturbed. A place archaeologists have painstakingly uncovered.

The Cimetière du Lubatier wasn’t always just a name on a map. It was a bustling place. A vital part of Marseille’s life. It served as the burial ground for the city’s residents from 1784 to 1905. The original cemetery was small. A modest rectangle. Only 15 meters long and 10 meters wide. It was a rural enclosure. This small plot nestled amidst Marseille’s agricultural heartland. It was built because the old cemetery was deemed insufficient.

The Industrial Revolution reshaped this area. Once farmland it became a densely populated working-class neighborhood. Factories sprang up. Immigration surged. The cemetery expanded twice. The first expansion in 1852. The second in 1866. It eventually covered 2650 square meters. The second expansion included a monumental entrance. This grand entrance reflected changing funerary practices. The cemetery was now open to the public. Funerals became more elaborate processions. Horses-drawn hearses replaced hand-carried biers.

Archaeological digs have revealed the southern area. Over 1000 square meters were explored. They found simple burials. Most in coffins. The coffins were arranged in straight lines. This shows the efficient management of space. However some areas were densely packed around features. Like the entrance and a large vault. The well-preserved wood lets us study the coffin construction. Many buttons clothing and decorative items were also found. These grave goods offer a glimpse into the lives of those buried here.

More than 150 burials have been excavated. Many belonged to young children. They were buried in specific sections. The cemetery reflects social stratification. Elaborate tombs belonged to wealthier residents. Simpler burials were for the less wealthy. This was a communal cemetery. All were laid to rest in the same place but their resting places differed. The Cimetière du Lubatier’s story continues to unfold. Each discovery adds another layer to the rich tapestry of Marseille’s history.
