Tucked away in the hills of Marseille’s 11th arrondissement lies the Cimetière des Accates. This isn’t your typical, grand cemetery. It’s a small, intimate space, established in 1819. The Cimetière des Accates whispers tales of a bygone era, a time when funeral processions paused along the path. They rested their burdens on stone benches, called “reposes cercueil,” offering respite to the weary pallbearers. Imagine the weight they carried, both physically and emotionally. These benches stand as silent witnesses to the community’s shared grief and respect for the departed. The Cimetière des Accates itself is a peaceful oasis. The grass whispers secrets to the wind. The sunlight dances on the tombstones, catching the glint of three pétanque balls. These balls rest on the grave of a man named Milou, etched with his name, a testament to a life lived and a game enjoyed. Before becoming a final resting place, the land held a different purpose. The Cimetière des Accates sits in a district known for its agricultural heritage. Vineyards and fruit trees thrived here, nourished by the waters of the Canal de Marseille which flows through the area. In 1720, during the devastating plague that ravaged Marseille, the Accates neighborhood offered refuge. While 50,000 of Marseille’s 90,000 residents perished, only 48 lives were lost in the Accates. This speaks to the unique character of this place, its resilience and tranquility. The Cimetière des Accates is more than just a burial ground. It’s a reflection of the community’s history, its traditions, and its enduring spirit. A visit to this hidden gem offers a glimpse into the heart of Marseille. It reveals the stories of those who rest here and the lives they lived in this unique corner of the world.
